Day Walks in the Lake District

20 Circular Routes on the Lakeland Fells

Day Walks in the Lake District is the second title in Vertebrate Publishing's series of compact and portable hillwalking guidebooks. This book showcases 20 circular routes in the Lake District, between 5 and 13 miles (8km and 21km) in length, suitable for hillwalkers of all abilities. Shortcuts and alternative routes extend the options available and make the most of the terrain on these circuits.

The routes are split into four geographical areas - north, east, south and west - and include walks from the main tourist bases, such as Keswick and Ambleside, as well as sought after peaks, such as Scafell Pike, Great Gable, Blencathra and Helvellyn. Also included for the adventurous are the Lake District's best known scrambles - Striding Edge on Helvellyn and Sharp Edge on Blencathra - together with more accessible alternatives.

The author of this guidebook, Stephen Goodwin, is a freelance journalist (former staff writer for The Independent), editor of the prestigious Alpine Journal and a Lake District local. In his introductions to each route he recalls the tales of Wordsworth, Walpole and the fascinating history of Lakeland and its peaks and fells.

Each route in this guide is described with easy-to-follow directions and details of distance, navigation information, refreshment stops, stunning location photography and is plotted on clear and easy to use Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 mapping.

“An invaluable addition to any walker's library.”

Book of the Month, Lakeland Walker Magazine

“In the Lake District it takes imagination to escape the crowds, and though this will guide you to the ever popular summits, it does so, commendably, by using many of the lesser-known paths.

It's a colourful guide stuffed with enticing photographs, skilfully placed alongside the walks they illustrate.”

TGO Magazine

“Another excellent guidebook from Vertebrate Graphics with a killer combination of concise, well-written directions, real OS 1:25,000 mapping and routes that tackle classic features in a fresh way.”
